The Keeper (One for Sorrow)

I was intrigued by the rhyme about magpies that begins ‘one for sorrow, two for joy’ and wanted to explore the idea of someone holding your feelings, and giving space to explore grief. A keeper of porcelain tears and soft sentiments, a golden key.

Reliquaries like those I saw in French cathedrals, and tear jars have been an inspiration for this piece. I’m so happy that I was able to achieve some iridescence on the tail and wing feathers, after its third firing.

Wall hung with picture wire installed at the back, black stoneware with slip and oxide washes, mother of pearl lustre, metal chain.
