Tales from my Homeland- whale sculpture lamp

Here is a whale lamp I made out of joy and curiosity. Both New Zealand and Wales are known for their coastline and mountains, maybe I was thinking of how lucky I was to call both places on either side of the world home.

I love the Welsh word ‘hiraeth’, one of those untranslatable words with the nuance of homesickness for a place, a time, a sense of belonging that cannot be fully returned to. The whale holds all four elements of air, earth, water and fire because you carry a sense of ‘home’ within yourself.

Made of my favourite porcelain and glazes, this whale lights up with a flick of a mains powered switch and will be half of my offering for @cardiffpotteryworkshops ‘Belonging Together’ members exhibition opening 17th October 2026, and will be available to take home by collection anticipated early November when the exhibition closes.
